Otherwise known as the “Battle of Little Bighorn” or “Custer’s Last Stand,” this drawing offers an indigenous perspective on one of the most significant moments in the War of 1876 between the Lakota and other Indian tribes and US federal troops. Custer had fought in the Civil War, as had many troops. Over 250 troops died, including Custer. Indigenous Americans produced history in multiple ways, from talking sticks to oral traditions to artistic representations on animal hide.
